A couple of incomplete fic recommendations – Harry Potter/Pokegirl crossovers:

I really don’t care for the Pokegirl setting, but these fics were fun.

Dialects and Accents In Harry Potter Fanfiction

— Matt Harris @ 11:11 pm

Manu86 has a wonderful post on how to write dialogue for many of the characters in Harry Potter. While I read Harry Potter fanfiction, I don’t write any. If I did, though, I would consider this an essential resource.

Unfortunately, due to the fact that the title of the article abbreviates Harry Potter as “HP”, the link doesn’t show up in Google when searching on “Dialects and Accents In Harry Potter”.

The link: Dialects and Accents in HP (Harry Potter)

Bungle in the Jungle

— Matt Harris @ 5:34 pm

Fic Title: Bungle in the Jungle
Author: JBern
Links: Bungle in the Jungle on Fanfiction.net, Bungle in the Jungle on FanficAuthors.net
Content: M-Mature
Status: Complete
Rating: E-Excellent

A recommendation on the Dark Lord Potter forums pointed me at JBern’s AU summer of fifth year fic, Bungle in the Jungle.. After reading the first chapter, I was addicted. JBern is an superb storyteller and while there are a couple of grammatical errors here and there, the quality of the story is such that they barely seem noticeable.

One of the key features about the story is that it is written in the second person, which is very rare. It works out very well here, as JBern uses it to envelop the reader in Harry’s experience. The battle scenes in particular, benefit heavily from the usage of the second person.

Some of the key features in Bungle in the Jungle include:

Currently, Bungle in the Jungle is my favorite fic (at least of those that are regularly updated) and I recommend it highly.

Note: Bungle in the Jungle on Fanficauthors.net requires registration to read. The registration is worth it despite the story also being on Fanfiction.net due to the high overall quality of Fanficauthors.net.

Update 05/20/07: Jbern has finished the story. Changed the Status to Complete.

Harry Potter & the Heir of Ancients

— Matt Harris @ 8:29 pm

Fic Title: Harry Potter & the Heir of Ancients
Author: anon2
Links: Harry Potter & the Heir of Ancients On Fanfiction.Net
Content: PG-13
Status: Work in progress
Rating: P – Poor

The first thing I notice about any fanfic is the language. Nothing turns me off a fic faster than poor grammar and spelling. Examples: Using “looser” for “loser”, “they’re” instead of “their” (and vice versa), “then” as opposed to “than”, etc. Harry Potter & the Heir of the Ancients doesn’t have any sort of problem like that – it is very well written from the viewpoint of grammar and spelling. It is certainly better written than any of my posts on this site. I still have major problems with this fic, though.

The chief problem I have with Harry Potter & the Heir of the Ancients is the plot. In my humble opinion, the fic is a Mary Sue, with Harry as the perfect character…a “Harry” Sue, if you will.

Just some examples of things that I disliked (spoilers ahead): (more…)

Snippet Of Text From The Half-Blood Prince

— Matt Harris @ 7:11 pm

Apparently, the door on J.K. Rowling’s site opened and there was a snippet of text behind it:

"He looked rather like an old lion. There were streaks of grey in his mane of tawny hair and his bushy eyebrows; he had keen yellowish eyes behind a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles and a certain rangy, loping grace even though he walked with a slight limp."

I don’t know what the quote means – it raises many questions and answers none. Some things that pop immediately to mind when reading it:

Special thanks to Arya who posted a a link to a screenshot of the snippet on her Yahoo Group.

Just my two Knuts worth…

This Means War!

— Matt Harris @ 1:58 pm

Fic Title: This Means War!
Author: Jeconais
Links: This Means War on PhoenixSong.Net and on Fanfiction.Net
Content: R
Status: In Progress (8 chapters/105,000+ words so far)
Rating: G-Good

Jeconais’ This Means War is a humor-fic similar to The Naked Quidditch Match. Ginny Weasley gets tired of her brothers ruining her love life, so she implements a plan to snag Harry.

I really didn’t notice much about the characterization in this fic, as I was laughing too hard. Ginny’s revenge on Malfoy alone was incredibly funny and made this fic worth while.

Pairing is Harry/Ginny, but worth it.

Kitty Torture

— Matt Harris @ 1:46 pm

Fic Title: Kitty Torture
Author: Fuyumi
Links: Kitty Torture on Fanfiction.Net
Content: PG
Status: Completed (3/2600+ words)
Rating: G-Good

Kitty Torture by Fuyumi is a very funny piece of short fiction. Crookshanks is annoyed by the way Harry and Hermione are pussyfooting around each other, and decides to take matters into his own paws and play matchmaker. Kitty Torture is written entirely from Crookshanks point of view and it is worth reading just to hear what Crookshanks calls Hermione, Harry and Ron.

Pairing is Harry/Hermione.

Charming

— Matt Harris @ 8:10 pm

Fic Title: Charming
Author: Fuyumi
Links: Charming on Fanfiction.Net
Content: R
Status: In Progress (35 chapters/118,000+ words so far)
Rating: G-Good

Charming by Fuyumi is a Harry/Hermione ‘shipper fic. Hermione creates an experimental charm to send her “where she belongs”. The premise of this fic could have resulting in a very cheesy story, but it didn’t. I especially like the way Fuyumi builds up to a relationship between Harry and Hermione. A lot of ‘shipper fics seem forced/fake to me (even if I like the ship), but Charming seems to flow quite naturally.

Charming is well written and I like all of the characterizations except for Draco. I have trouble believing that Draco Malfoy will ever turn out to be a decent human being. The plot is very interesting as well.
